BUDDY SYSTEM OF CARE AT DEVETSHOF RETIREMENT VILLAGE

DeWetshof Retirement Village is run by the Municipal Housing Department of Johannesburg and houses one hundred pensioners.  Sister Heather Withers, who runs a Clinic there every Thursday, is sponsored by the Flower Foundation Retirement Homes as part of their Social Investment Program.  She is pictured here with vital members of the BUDDY SYSTEM which has been implemented in DeWetshof Village, as part the residents’ safety and support structure.  <>
<>
<>Genie Wright from the Rotary Club of Johannesburg East was concerned about the residents’ welfare and she with Sister Heather discussed what happens when anyone becomes ill, or falls and is unable to call for help.   This was particularly highlighted when one unfortunate resident was tragically found five days after he had died.   <>
<>
<>A sturdy plastic flip chart system for the residents to display in their window was designed.  The display which illustrates a day of the week serves as a sign that residents are well. There is also an “Away” sign for when they are on holiday or in hospital.  <>
<>
<>Between Flower Foundation and the generous donation from Rotary the system is in place.

A surveillance schedule of this Buddy System is carried out daily by the Handyman Alfred Lubhede (in picture) and help can be summoned speedily.  All that remains is that the residents remember which day of the week it is!
